Turrbal was the name for the local Aboriginal dialect in the area. In its modern form, the name was given to a township on Pumicestone Passage. The Aboriginals called the Toorbul Point area Ningi Ningi (ningi ningi are what we call oysters). Today Toorbul is still a fishing village with the added attraction of peace and tranquillity. If you follow the Esplanade south, you will find the Toorbul Bird Roost. The intertidal areas adjacent to Toorbul are the richest feeding grounds in the Pumicestone Passage for shorebirds. At high tide, these birds roost at a number of sights along the shoreline. Birds that can be found include, the Pied Oystercatcher, Bar-tailed Godwit, Eastern Curlew, Red-capped Plover, Whimbrel, Curlew Sandpiper and the Lesser Sand Plover.
