Lovely Desert Hike to Amir Mountain 20 KM North of Eilat
This is one of the most beautiful desert hikes we have taken in Israel. Offers amazing sandstone scenery reminiscent of trips to the Sinai Peninsula. Use Trail map # 20 - Eilat Mountains.
There are several ways to climb up to Har Amir. Drive on Highway 90 (Arava Highway) and at the 20 KM sign post turn West onto a hard packed dirt path to "Shahoret Canyon" along the blue trail marker.
We parked the car at the entrance to "Nahal Amir" and hiked up the mountain along the blue trail through Nahal Amir. This is quite a steep hike, needing to pull oneself up through rock outcrops, but lot's of fun. Our youngest, seasoned hiker - almost 8 years old - had some difficulty where the gravel was slippery, but all enjoyed the hike up. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to hike up to the top of the mountain. Would probably be a difficul hike for younger children and folks with physical challenges.
This trail is one of the best marked trails we have seen. At every blue trail marker you can see the next trail marker.
After going to Mt. Amir (the blue trail meets the green trail, go East along the Green trail), we returned along the Green Trail West and continued until we got to the black trail which leads down through upper Shohoret canyon. This is also part of Shvil Yisrael (the cross Israel national trail.) This route is not steep. The scenery is magnificant. (see photos) This will take you back to the blue trail along the dirt path and back to the car. You can also add a trip through the Lower Shahoret Canyon.
The entire hike (without the lower Shahoret Canyon) took us around 4 hours with a lunch break. (during the winter months)
Remember - in the desert you must carry 3-4 liters of water per person, wear a hat and have a good trail map.
An alternative and easier route is to park one car at the Amram columns (Amudai Amram) and Hike up to Har Amir from the North side and descend through the Upper Shahoret canyon (black Trail) where another car waits. Also, can hike up and return along the black trail along upper Shahoret Canyon.
Personally we think the loop trail we did offers the best route - adventurous steep hiking and magnificent scenery.
The cache is hidden in a black 35mm film canister. There are some coins inside. Bring a pen or pencil to sign the log page folded inside. Please return cache to same location so wind won’t blow it away.
Wonderful hike during the winter months when visiting Eilat.
