Geocache Description:

Located above a layby in the Cromwell Gorge.

The cache is a 500ml camo painted snaplock container hidden at ground level and not visible from any distance.

The layby is above the area where Hartley and Reilly first discovered gold in August 1862. They found 39.5kg in 2 months. This find started the rush to the Dunstan opening the interior of Otago. For anyone who knows how cold it can be here in winter will have some idea how uncomfortable it must have been to camp out here and to be puddling around in the river. However that discomfort was well worth it to Hartley and Reilly.

Please note that the pencil sharpener is NOT a trading item.
