INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #547

"Stierwalt Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to the Stierwalt Cemetery in Ray Township of Morgan County. While this cemetery only consists of a couple of acres, it has over 150 graves in that area. Be careful when visiting this cemetery as there is just enough room to get a single car off the side of the road. The cemetery includes a pioneer, Elijah Walters, who moved to Indiana from Kentucky in 1817 and several Civil War veterans. You will find veterans here from the 25th, 29th, 33rd, and 70th Indiana regiments, as well as the 12th Michigan. Not uncommon in these old cemeteries, there are lots of child and infant graves here. One of the Stierwalt families have four young children buried here. It makes you wonder how the families dealt with this amount of tragedy.

He Almost Made It

Noah Bowman was a member of the 29th Indiana Infantry regiment. It appears he nearly survived the Civil War only to die in Chatanooga Tennesse where the regiment had been performing garrison duty. He died on March 14, 1865, a mear 26 days prior to the surrender at Appomattix Courthouse.

Civil War Veteran

Based on the size of these monuments, life after the Civil War must have went well for Levi Voshell and his wife. Levi served in the 25th Indiana Infantry and saw action at Fort Donelson, shiloh, Corinth and Atlanta.
