Geocache Description:

This cache is a small lock’n’lock with a log book and room for small trade items or travel bugs. Not big enough for a pen so be a good geocacher and BRING YOUR OWN PEN. It is accessible without stepping off the trail and wheelchair accessable from the east. Please cache responsibly and don’t bushwack here. Part of the name is a good clue where to look. Please replace and recover the cache carefully. The rest of the text is about the area, not the cache itself.

Cedarsprings Trail has three branches linking Old Clayburn Rd, Paradise Place and Bateman Road. The trail is well maintained and graveled with some reasonable elevation gain, but nothing too difficult. A few blocks long, it is a nice walk particularly if you take in both branches before returning to your parking location. Free street parking is available at all three access points.

For a longer walk, continue down the little traveled Eastern section of Bateman Rd to Bateman Park, which links into McKee and other area trails. You can also cross Old Clayburn Rd, continue east through the subdivisions and link to Straitan Trail.

The area has an interesting history. Mr. Ayling, who lived on the West end of the trail for over 70 years and owned the land that is now Paradise Place, told me that Model T’s used to travel up Bateman Rd to Old Clayburn Rd along the present trail route. Too much elevation gain, and a difficult corner led to the City abandoning the route as unsuitable for modern cars. The land lay dormant for decades.

When my family developed adjacent Cedarsprings Country Estates and Paradise Place during the early 1990’s we decided to create the Cedarsprings Trail as a gift to the community.

The trail affords a nice view over its namesake, Cedarsprings and beyond to the Matsqui Prairie and Mission area. Notice the more than 200 mature cedar trees saved during the development. Natural springs were collected and channeled through water features and into a community storm detention pond in the middle of Cedarsprings. This pond both prevents flooding and prevents silt from harming fish downstream.

These unusual features earned Cedarsprings commendations from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 4 Gold and 1 Silver Georgie Awards from the Canadian Home Builders Assoc. including Best Project in its Class and Best Environmental Protection in BC and a Fraser Valley Real Estate Board Award for Best Project. Cedarsprings has become a model for environmentally sensitive and sustainable development in the Fraser Valley and we hope that others continue to build on the innovations pioneered here.

We hope you enjoy this trail and encourage you to try our other caches. There are several good caches by others a few blocks North.
