Geocache Description:

Directions: easiest way to get here is head to Downpatrick, then take the B176 to Killough and follow the signs for St Johns Point along Point Road to the layby (N54°13.860, W005°39.415) – which is the only acceptable place to park for the cache. Continue on down the road to the lighthouse

St John's Point Lighthouse: built in 1844 (height nearly tripled in 1893) with an active; focal plane 37 m (120 ft); two quick white flashes every 7.5 s; there is also an auxiliary light at a focal plane of 14 m (45 ft), showing a white or red flash, depending on direction, every 3 s. The light is also shown by day in foggy weather.

It’s a 39.5 m (130 ft) tower with lantern and gallery; bivalve Fresnel lens, painted with black and yellow horizontal bands and a white lantern. The original lighthouse, designed by George Halpin, had a height of 14 m (45 ft). This is one of the most complete light stations surviving in Ireland and the Irish Landmark Trust has agreed to assume management of at least some of the buildings.

Its located about 5 km (3 mi) south of Killough, marking the entrance to Dundrum Bay. Site and tower closed, but the lighthouse can be viewed from outside the wall of the compound

Opposite the layby is St John's Point Church: This small rectangular church probably dates from the 10th or 11th century and may mark the site of an early monastery associated with John, Son of Cairland. The east wall is now reduced to foundations but a mid-19th century description indicated that it had a small pointed window. There is a small south window which would appear to have had a lintelled head. Excavations in 1978 revealed burials under the north wall. At the roadside nearby is a Holy Well and a bullaun stone. EHS are responsible for the upkeep now.

Despite the signs saying this is on private property - it means the buildings pertaining to the lighthouse and its outbuildings etc, the cache itself is on no-mans land. Cache is a Tupperware box with all the normal goodies inside. This is my first cache so let me know what you think please!
