A two stage Multi-cache with wonderful hiking and a beautiful view,
the walking is mostly on muddy ATV trails. Terrain is gently
rolling for most of the way, quite steep and slippery towards the
end. Total elevation change less than 300 feet, but EXTREMELY muddy
much of the way. Total round-trip distance is around 3 miles.
This two stage multicache is in memory of our dog Baxter, who was
with us for nine years, and died on December 27th, 2006 doing what
he loved best....hiking in the woods with me. These woods were one
of his favorite places, so I thought it appropriate to place a
cache here in memory of him. He would be most pleased to know that
people come to this area to share in the same love of the outdoors
that he did.
This is not intended to be a quick or easy find, so give yourself
at least a couple of hours to fully enjoy. It is worth it! There is
a lot of mud at almost any time of year if the ground is not
frozen, so wear good boots. This cache is a dog related cache, so
treasures will hopefully be doggy in nature: dog tags, dog photos,
dog toys, etc., but not required.
Parking can be in one of two spots to access the hike. One is
located on Methodist Road about 1 mile south off of Rt. 302 at the
Toppi Gravel Pit. You can park where the powerlines cross Methodist
road, directly in front of the placed granite boulders, just to the
right of the entrance to the gravel pit at coordinates N 43*
43.924’ W 070* 21.437’. Follow the ATV paths from there. Make sure
to stay off of the Toppi property, as it is private.
The other parking spot is at the Prides Corner Congregational
Church located on Pride street, about a third of a mile SW off of
Rt. 302. You can park at the church, then cross the road to the
dirt access drive, and continue on the ATV paths up the powerlines.
Entering from either location, the challenge of this multicache is
finding the correct combination of turns on the trails and paths
that criss-cross these woods. The cache may be found staying
entirely on established dirt roads and paths, so bushwacking is not
necessary. Don’t be discouraged by the many mud ponds that you will
have to get around on your way…they are always there.
A hint: Entering from Methodist Road, there are a couple bridges
that cross the brook. Entering from Pride Street Church, the
correct route will pass by The Quarry Cache
here .
Very close to the destination cache is a small stone cabin that
someone has lovingly built; please look and enjoy, but do not
disturb.
Good Luck, and keep Baxter in mind.
