INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #549

"Mount Gilead Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to the Mount Gilead Cemetery in the metropolis of Brown's Crossing between Martinsville and Paragon. This is not a particularly old cemetery. It is still active and many headstones are from the last 50 years. There are a few veterans of interest though. On one of my visits I was also greeted by four of the friendliest Spaniels you would ever want to meet. They live across the street from the cemetery. There is room for one or two cars to park here without having to open the gate and drive into the cemetery.

70th Indiana Infantry

Two veterans of the 70th Indiana Volunteer Infantry are interred at Mount Gilead. Several men from the Paragon area were in the 70th. The commanding officer of the 70th was Colonel Benjamin Harrison, who would be elected president of the United States in 1888. Herod Atkins and Wiley Bragg both entered service in June 1862 and mustered out after the end of the war in 1865. Bragg entered service as a corporal and mustered out as a sergeant. The 70th spent much of the war in Tennessee before fighting at Lookout Mountain and joining General Sherman on his march to the sea. A history of the regiment was written by Samuel Merritt and can be found at the Morgan County library.

390th Bombardment Group

This headstone immediately caught my attention, as I had a great uncle who as a sergeant in the Air Force. He was a ball-turret gunner on a B-17 and was lost somewhere over Germany. Any of you who have watched he movie "Memphis Belle" knows the hazardous duty faced by the bomber crews. If you were on a B-17 crew flying missions over Germany, your chances of survival were not very good. Like my uncle, it appears Sergeant Williams also died in the service of his country. There is a memorial and museum for the 390th in Tucson Arizona. The 390th set a single day record when they downed 62 German planes during a mission on October 10, 1943. Overall, the group destroyed 378 German planes while losing 179 of their own.
