A walk to the summit of The Binn hill, overlooking Burntisland.
The summit, at 193m, is the 2nd highest point on the SE Fife coast (the highest being Largo Law at 290m)
On a clear day there are fantastic views across the Forth to the Forth Bridges, Edinburgh and beyond North Berwick. To the North you can see East and West Lomond and sometimes even as far as the Grampian Mountains!
My first geocache is dedicated to the hill I see from my home every day and have often climbed with my dogs during the dark days of winter when the Munros are just too serious a proposition!
It has been placed to celebrate my 50th find and is a 'Coin Box Cache' - please use it to trade or discover geocoins. Please ensure that there is always at least one geocoin left in the cache and that coins or travel bugs you take are moved on towards their goal.
To answer the questions below you'll need to 'Bag' the summit of The Binn, where you'll find an indicator (type of trig point) with information about features you can see from the summit.
Parking is 25m East of the starting point at N56.04.127 W003.13.343. There is adequate parking in the layby/verge for a few carefully parked cars. The co-ordinates given are for the route signposted 'Public Path to Binn'
Follow the (usually muddy!) path up the hill until you reach some concrete steps - this is the steepest part of the walk. At the top of these steps (N56.04.278 W003.13.266) turn West towards the open fields. Allieballie's 'Fife Rocks! Series: Oil Shale' cache can be reached by walking East from this point, along the cycle path.
As you pass through the small area of woodland, look to your right and you will see the remains of Low Binn village, a small community of 33 houses built around the Shale Oil mining on the hill in the 1880's. The last resident left in 1954. To find out more about Binn Village's history, go to the website in this listing and click on 'Binnend'.
You will pass a wooden stile then walk up the south side of the field to cross a stone stile/steps at the top (N56.04.244 W003.13.466). Carry on up the path taking care not to stray too close to the edge as there are steep drops to your left.
Look out for the huge WWII anti-mine nets which have been slung over the cliff face to prevent falling rocks and debris crashing into the houses at the foot of the hill! (A friend of mine lives there and tells the story of how a huge boulder crashed through his neighbour's kitchen window one afternoon while she was having a cuppa in the front room!)
Around 1 mile and 150m ascent from the starting point will get you to the summit indicator. Drink in the views and look out for any birds of prey, which I have often seen rising on the thermals above the ridge.
Now for the questions;
A. Last digit of the year mentioned on the inscription
B. 'Sidlaw Hills (vw) miles' Add v and w
C. (Looking North) Number of letters in first word of hill immediately left of line indicating Magentic North
D. Number of times the words 'Hill' and 'Hills' appear (x), number of times the word 'Law' appears (y), number of times the word 'Lighthouse' appears (z)
D = x divided by (y + z)
E. Subtract the 2nd digit of the height of The Binn (in feet) from the first
F. Ben Chonzie (our closest Munro!) - last digit of distance given in KM
Cache is located at N56.04.ABC W003.13.DEF
The box is very well hidden - please try to replace the cache so that it cannot be seen.
Enjoy the walk!
