If you have a seat on the bench nearby (note 8/3/08 - I wouldn't
recommend sitting on that bench anymore), the road you are looking
at is called Old Chicago Drive. Kittycorner to the southwest,
across route 53, you will see an automobile auction lot. This was
the site of the world's first completely enclosed amusement park
and shopping center - Old Chicago. It opened in 1975 with much
fanfare, but due to many problems it closed its doors in 1980,
never to reopen and was finally torn down in 1986. You can,
however, still see parts of Old Chicago in the 1978 horror film,
The Fury (imdb).
Do you remember Old Chicago? If you have any fond memories of
this mall/amusement park or even photos that you'd like to share,
please post them in your log. Thanks for visiting.
