Geocache Description:

This is the sixth cache in a series highlighting the local structures designed by world famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. However, it is NOT required in order to find the Frank Lloyd Wright Final.

Graycliff was the summer residence of Darwin and Isabelle Martin. It sits atop a high bluff overlooking Lake Erie and generally embodies Frank Lloyd Wright's prarie style, including a long, low, rectangular form, stucco and stone materials, linear organization of spaces, a massive chimney, and an interrelationship of building with nature. Designed and built in the late 1920s, Graycliff is a late and relatively restrained example of his prarie style.

From the beginning, the Martins had strong ideas about the design of their summer home, and Wright accomodated their wishes. Isabelle Martin's vision of Graycliff was driven by personal needs and feelings about space and was significantly different than Wright's. She never really liked the dark, private spaces of their home in Buffalo. Graycliff is a stark contrast in that it is very open with windows providing views of the lake and the land around the house.

Darwin Martin died in 1935, and Isabelle Martin continued to live in the house with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren until her death in 1945. After 1945, the house remained vacant until 1950 when the Piarist Fathers acquired the house. Today, the Graycliff Conservancy is in the process of restoring the buildings and site to its original condition, after it was modified by the Piarists. Tours of the estate are available by appointment in April through November.

The cache has been placed with permission of the Graycliff Conservancy. Please do not search for this cache after dark. You will only have to venture a few feet into the wooded area to find the cache. If the chain is up across the driveway, please do not go beyond it.
