As of March 28th, 2008 we noticed that the Putnam Tower has been
removed. It is still a nice view though.
Welcome to the metropolis of
Putnam, Texas!
Putnam was established with the construction of the Texas and
Pacific (T & P) Railway in 1880. The community was actually
named Catclaw until the first post office opened in 1882. With the
new post office, the name was changed to Putnam for Gen. Israel
Putnam, a hero of the American Revolution.
In 1910, a company planned to make Putnam a health resort to
exploit it's local mineral water, but promoters could not compete
with the well-established resort town of Mineral Wells not too far
East on I-20. Growing fruit and oil production proved more capable
of sustaining the town.
The population was 250 in 1890 and 487 in 1940 but declined to
116 by 1980 and in 1990 the population was 103.
NOTES: There is a
special prize for the First To Find. Please take a picture with you
wearing it and post it on the cache listing.
Also, take a few minutes and enjoy the view and explore. Check
out the old foundations nearby.
There is not very much going on in Putnam these days.
