Mr. Incredible!
and the Huge
Erratic
The enormous boulder
at this location is an excellent example of a
"glacial erratic." An
"erratic" boulder is one that has been transported from its
original position (in this case, probably Canada) to the present;
by a glacier.
This "Huge Erratic" was
probably placed at this location,
Irving
Learning Trails, to make it into a landmark.
Irving
Materials, Inc. developed these two hectares just north of
it's Huntington Quarry in Huntington County into an educational
park. The park contains a rock garden, four ecosystems, and antique
mining equipment; and will be used for area schools; it is also
open to the general public. There are several other examples of
glacial erratics in the park as well.
Sometimes it is possible to
determine where the erratic boulder came from by means of it's
composition. It is made
of pink granite. On one side of the boulder you can see ice
grooves.
Those were probably made by other stones and boulders, frozen into
the moving glacier, that scored groves while moving over the
land.
To log this
cache you must post a photo of you
and
your GPSr with the Huge
Erratic in the background;
AND
answer one of these questions:
what is the rock's height, diameter, and circumference?
OR, a
cubic yard of stone weighs approximately 2.5 tons, estimate how
heavy you think this boulder is.
Please email me the answers - DO
NOT post these measurements with your log!
