Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden along the trail usually used as the descent route by parties undertaking the Yamnuska Traverse. The return distance is approximately 3.4 kms with an elevation gain of 284 meters. The trail to the cache is well built and in good shape but does have some steep sections. Park in the Yamnuska Recreational Area parking lot located north of Hwy 1A about 2.2 kms east of the Hwy 1X / 1A intersection. The journey to the cache should be possible during normal winter conditions.

The trail starts near the notice board and my mileage estimates were measured from that point. After walking approximately 750 meters, at the top of the first steep section take the left fork, shown as the climber’s route on the trail sign. After approximately 1.17 kms, at the top of the next steep section again take the left fork. At this point most of the elevation has been gained and the trail now traverses along the lower slopes of Yam towards the cache located approximately 1.7 kms from the parking lot. Use caution when crossing a drainage channel shortly before reaching the cache.

The cache is located on the edge of a massive rockslide that came off the towering cliffs of Yamnuska in the distant past. The boulder field can be observed down the mountain and out into the flatter area beyond the toe of the scree slope. The cache is hidden about 30 meters above the trail behind a huge limestone block that was part of the slide. The boulder field is well worth further exploration if you don’t mind the extra effort involved. A short distance past the cache the trail turns sharply up into the famous Yamnuska scree run. This is extremely tedious to go up but an absolute blast to come down.

It might be possible to access the lowest parts of the slide outrun by using some of the many old trails and cutlines south of the quarry operation. Travel through the quarry and along the quarry road past the parking lot was banned many years ago.

The cache is an ammo can containing some good swag plus a FTF prize of a $5.00 Tim Horton gift book. GPS accuracy was +/- 5m.
