Geocache Description:

H is for Homeopathic medicine (Dr. Burritt)

A series of caches featuring North Alabama area, one letter at a time. Find as many of the series as you can, and if you get all twenty-six, email me for a special prize. In 1955, at his death, Dr. William Henry Burritt willed his home on Round Top Mountain to the City of Huntsville as the city’s first museum. Dr. Burritt, was also the son and grandson of doctors, and believed a healthy lifestyle was essential to good health. The foundation of the goat’s barn is near here. You may notice rectangles in the concrete, that’s where the two by fours were placed. Dr. Burritt drank goat’s milk and it is noted he also donated milk to the hospital and to the Alms house. Dr. Burritt is interned in a mausoleum in Maple Hill Cemetery with his first wife, Pearl and his parents. Her parents, the Johnsons, are buried nearby. His second wife was Josie, they met while she was visiting the Monte Sano Hotel and she needed a doctor. She passed away while they lived in St. Louis. His third wife was Alma, they divorced before his death. While you are here, you might want to visit the Museum. The grounds have restored historic homes, buildings and a church. The gift shop also has some unusual and interesting items. An admission fee is charged. You can visit Dr. Burritt’s home, this is the second one-the first burned to the ground just as he was moving in. It is built in the shape of a Maltese Cross for good ventilation. Also look at the closets-they are the size of hay bales. You might catch a glimpse of his car in the lower garage. It had a removable steering wheel to change sides for coming up and down the mountain.
