Tarbutton Territory Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

deltafoxfire: The cache is still there....in the original location. However it is not a quick find. I am recommending that it be archived as it is near a volunteer fire station, and very close to school property. In addition, there is not a good place to park for a quick find.. If I can find a place to hide a quick find at a later date, will establish a new cache.

Geocache Description:

Edna “Tiny” Tarbutton, set national records for organized basketball and was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. She coached Baskin High School to nine state championships, including eight straight from 1948 - 1955, to highlight a 33-year career in which she compiled a 654-263-2 record for a .711 winning percentage.

The Baskin High School women's basketball team holds the record for longest winning streak in organized sports. The lady-rams won 218 consecutive games from 1948 to 1953, a span of six years. Once the streak was broken, another 71 game streak continued. In the span of ten years the lady rams led by Hall of Fame coach Tiny Tarbutton would go 315 and 2 with 9 state titles and average winning margin of over 30 points.

Previously, she was inducted into the Long Purple Line, the highest honor awarded to alumni of Northwestern Louisiana State University. In 1993, she was enshrined in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Tarbutton previously was inducted in the Louisiana High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame as one of 10 inaugural inductees in 1980, and she was enshrined in the National High School Hall of Fame. Nicknamed "Tiny," she was noted as a strict disciplinarian and fierce competitor, but she was also one of the most popular teachers at Baskin, located near Winnsboro in northeast Louisiana.

• String of consecutive wins set a mark that still stands as a national record for organized sports—high school, college, or pros—and stretched across the course of six seasons (1948-1953)

• Baskin teams scored 11,709 points to 5,300 points for their opponents during the streak, averaging 53.7 points per game while allowing just 24.3 points per game for an average margin of victory of nearly 30 points

This cache is established to honor the record of Coach Tiny Tarbutton and to recognize Baskin High School. The High School building you can see from this cache was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 7, 1981. The gym is about the same as it was in 1947 - 1955. It is white building located near the brick two story high school building.

You will drive through a “School Zone” to get to the cache. Please remember that these children are our future. Please drive carefully….and slowly. This cache is placed with permission of the landowner.

As this a micro cache, you will need to take something to write with you. There is a FTF Ribbon in the original cache.
