Geocache Description:

BMEWS Tracking Station (abandoned)

Abandoned ground radar of the "Ballistic Missile Early Warning System" (BMEWS).
Chaguaramas National Park, Trinidad.

About 35 to 50 minutes to walk on a well kept asphalt road with varying steepness. Very scenic views of the famous bamboo cathedral and boca del dragon (north coast).

The surprise comes when you reach the very top and get the view of the giant radar reflector.
I am deliberately not including images of the reflector in order to give you the full impact of the view...
You can search for it on Google Earth, though...

The brave at heart can climb up into the dish and enjoy a fascinating view of the north coast and northern Trinidad.
Please use only the metal ladders INSIDE the tower until you reach the platform right below the dish.

This antenna was the origin of the first satellite-aided radio broadcast (Quote):
"Using NASA’s Echo I satellite, a 100-foot aluminized balloon orbiting at an altitude of a thousand miles, Rome scientists transmitted radio signals from Trinidad, British West Indies, to a 30-foot antenna at the Floyd test site, three miles east of today’s Griffiss Business & Technology Park."

IMPORTANT NOTE - Please read:
----------------------------
As with every place in the tropics, please be aware of natural dangers you may not have to consider at home!

Look carefully where to step and/or place your hands!

A number of animals rating from annoying to life-threatening can be found in Trinidad!
It is always a good idea to use a stick to knock around overgrown or obstructed spots before touching or stepping there.
You may find ant nests in the most incredible locations, but even poisonous snakes exist in the area (Bushmaster...). They will not harm you if you see them in time and keep a respectful distance!
Don't use your stick on the wasp nests that were present above the entrance to the tower! (See image) Walk in and out quickly and let them be...
