Trail Hiker Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

-allenite-: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future (within 60 days), just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

N045 59.680 W083 46.765 will get you close to the camp grounds. The trail is accessed by the camp grounds or off a small parking area along the road leading to the camp grounds. The trail, marked with colored survey tape, is over rugged terrain with moderate to steep slope. This cache should be accessible during snow conditions. The tree canopy makes getting a good GPS signal difficult in a few places on the trail, but if you stay on the trail, you will pick the signal up again.

Many have come to Drummond Island to camp, swim, fish, and boat. Some like to hike or sit to watch beautiful sunsets. In 2002, a small grass roots group called Island Heritage established a hiking trail designated as the upper and lower trails, each 1.5 miles long. A third branch of the trail was added to the highest point in 2006. Hiking the trail you can enjoy many wildflowers and other flora in the warmer months. All times of the year you can hear the water lapping the shoreline; smell the cedar or see the vibrant colors of the sugar maples and other hardwoods. You can snow shoe this trail during the snow months. At a bend in the trail you may find a large feature that will remind you of dessert. Along the way, you will find a grove of trees with their trunks twisted and snapped off when a straight line wind storm hit the Island a few years back. Although not necessary, you might like to use a walking stick to help you step over roots and up limestone rock steps. The cache is a coffee can containing a notepad log, a couple of pencils, a puddingstone, a rosary, a 'Northwest Airlines' deck of cards, a purple 'walking' egg, a tape measurer marked 'Vesta', a brass medallion that says "I will do my best', and a cedar ball/marble.
