Geocache Description:

An easy find and the end of the road.

This cache is at the spot which is a memorial to those that died on 10th April, 1968 when the Wahine hit Barretts Reef. When it was obvious that the ferry was in serious danger and the passengers were told to get into the lifeboats, the emergency services in Wellington were all sent to Seatoun. However, the tides and the wind (surely Wellington doesn't have that much wind!!) blew the lifeboats and those passengers in the water towards Eastbourne beach. As people began to be washed up at Eastbourne there was only the local policeman and a few locals to help with the rescue. Today, there are still people who live there who on that day, came out of their homes with blankets and helped those out of the sea.
The memorial at this place tells that of the 51 people who died that day, 49 of them came ashore at Eastbourne.

On a sunny day, this is a popular spot so be very careful of muggles. Watch that when you put the cache back, that you can't see it from the front.
