Geocache Description:

Curly's Cache is located near the top of the Ghost and Shadow Trails in the Pittsfield State Forest.

This is short and steep ascent up the mountain (.6 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain). Park at the first parking lot on the left after you enter the Pittsfield State Forest for the shortest walk.

This cache is a tribute to Curly Voll who set the record of 1 minute 12 seconds for coming down the Shadow Trail in 1944. Bring your skis and see if you can come down faster than that!

The Ghost and Shadow trails were used in the 1940's for downhill ski racing. When you walk up (or down) either trail, imagine yourself racing down them - no gates - just get down the trail as fast as you can - on wooden skis with leather boots, straps for bindings, no helmet and bamboo poles. The trail wasn't packed by a groomer, it was packed by people sidestepping up the hill. Take a step back in time and find this cache!

Initial contents of the cache include: $10 gift certificate to Dunkin Donuts, History of the Olympics from 1920-2002 DVD set, tie-dyed T-shirt (in honor of Curly's habit of wearing rather gawdy clothing), Taconic Crest Trail book, Ben & Jerry's free cone certificate, Snoppy Skiing ornament, some magnets, some stickers, two flashlights, a railroad tie and some patches.

Don’t miss Curly’s Record Run! It’s a snowshoe race held every January on these trails – also in honor of Curly. You can find out more at: www.berkshiresports.org.
