Geocache Description:

The southernmost remnant of the Ridge Route cement roadway.

Look for the narrow strip of cement that begins at the southern end of the turnout (see photo). I believe this is the southernmost remnant of the Ridge Route cement roadway.

The original 1915 Ridge Route was a graded dirt road with an oil surface. In 1919 it was paved with concrete, a remarkable distinction for the time. As road engineering advanced in the mid 1920s the winding concrete had become obsolete. To help relieve congestion many curves in the road were straightened out with wide cuts to eliminate blind turns. The new roadbed was paved with asphalt between the concrete. This location appears to be an example of a typical road realignment done in the 20s or 30s.

The section of Ridge Route Road at the cache was still in use until the late 1990s or early 2000s for local traffic and continued up this canyon past Castaic Brick. Preservationists fought unsuccessfully to maintain the original alignment. After a land swap with Castaic Brick, the developer of the nearby housing tract realigned Ridge Route Road to the west for about half a mile. It then rejoins the old roadway near the school with most of the bypassed roadway ending up on private property.

NOTE the parking restrictions. Park near the telephone pole (hint). Don’t leave your vehicle unattended to walk down to the lake.

Also note that this becomes a private road not far beyond the turnout and is posted with a “No Trespassing” sign. To access additional sections of the historic Ridge Route go back to the stop sign and turn right on Ridge Route Road.
