Mission for the Wallis Family (Waikato) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Butterfly_Lady: We enjoyed setting up this cache in 2007, featuring an important settler family in this area.

Over the years road and sea wall changes have made the final location harder and harder to hide a box at, and some of the intermediate information points have deteriorated a little, causing some cachers to get frustrated.

We think it is time for the cache to shut down, and perhaps another cacher could take up the opportunity to publish something in the area with a similar historical story to tell.

Our thanks to the 174 cachers who persevered through to the end on this less-common type of multicache, and to the 17 favourite points awarders.

Geocache Description:

A multi stage puzzle cache which you can walk (3.5km, some uphill / downhill) or travel easily by car. Based in the seaside town of Raglan.

The listed co-ordinates are not for the final cache. They will take you to the first waypoint, where you can get further information to seek the cache.

Note:  this puzzle was updated in August 2022 to point to a new, permanent final cache location, after nearby council works were finally completed.

The Rev. James and Mrs Mary Anne Wallis arrived in Raglan as part of the Weslyan Methodist Mission, and erected the first Christian Church in the Raglan area.
During his time of service, James Wallis, together with and as assistant to John Whiteley, gathered 10 signatures to the Treaty of Waitangi, in the Kawhia area.
This cache will reveal a little about the Wallis Family.

At waypoint 1 - seek a memorial plaque.

ABCD = the year the first European child of the area was born.
E = A + B
XY = the date in November that she was born.
Z = X multiplied by Y
P = the verse (not chapter) of the Psalm mentioned on the memorial. (painted in green, at the very bottom - let your fingers do the reading, or take a magnifying glass)

Please proceed to waypoint 2 located at
S 37 48.PAE
E 174 52.D (D-1)(Z)

A headstone at waypoint 2 will help you locate the next waypoint and the final cache.
18F2. F = the decade digit of the year in which Thomas Jackson, the second son, exchanged mortality for life.

Please proceed to waypoint 3, noting the name of the road that this is on.
S 37 47.BDB
E 174 52.YX(F-1)

A dedication plaque will give you just a little bit more....
19GH = The year the land was presented.
