Geocache Description:

Highbanks is named for its massive 100-foot high shale bluffs that tower over the Olentangy State Scenic River. Tributary streams cutting across the bluff created deep ravines extending into the eastern part of the park. This area has been designated a National Natural Landmark.

Approaching the Cache Site

The details of Highbanks Metro Park can be found on http://www.metroparks.net/default.aspx . Please review this website for information about park hours of operation and review the associated detailed map of the park. Trail maps are also available within the park. The cache was placed at the best location to take in a panoramic view of the deep glacial ravine on the northwestern edge of the park. Cachers should park in the first Big Meadows parking lot and enter the trailhead shown in the pictures. The cache itself is a 6x9x4” camouflaged plastic container with logbook and pen and has room for trade items. Total distance from car to cache is 0.2 miles along a well-maintained clay and gravel trail and the distance from path to cache is 15 feet on the side of the trail away from the ravine. The cache can also be reached from the Nature Center, which is 0.5 miles from car to cache, and which is a slightly longer but more scenic walk. It cannot be reached from the mansion shelter area due to the glacial ravine between the shelter and the cache. This Columbus Metro Parks CMP-Highbanks cache is placed with the permission of park management using Permit Number 04-01-07, a requirement for metro park caches. Please view the pictures for hints to the cache location.

If you are caching with children, a visit to the Nature Center is essential! The 30-foot Dinichthys, an armored prehistoric fish, swam in the waters that covered this area in the Late Devonian Period 370 million years ago and can be seen in the Nature Center. Highbanks is also rich in Native American history. The park contains two Adena Indian burial mounds and a prehistoric earthwork. As this is the busiest Columbus Metro Park due to numerous hikers and joggers, stealth will normally be required.
