Geocache Description:

This is a mid-size lock and lock filled with Matchbox cars.

When I was 15 I got my first job. It was at a garment factory owned by my uncle in Bradford, VT (actually fourth building in on the right.)Being 15, driving was a high priority. My father and Uncle in their ultimate wisdom decided that they would help each out by teaching each others children the basics. That way they could be more patient. It actually makes a lot of sense and seeing how I worked for my uncle, and we had to travel back and forth to Bradford from Barre we had lots of time for driving instruction. I learned how to drive a stick right near this very spot, and learned how to back the delivery van up to the dock when it was time to load it. My uncle would tell me to back the van up then leave me there to do it alone. That way I could take my time and he could do other things. If you have never driven a stick and you have barely driven at all, getting that van not to stall will drive you crazy. I bet the starter and the clutch in that old van were never the same again after that. But I persevered, and believe it or not the van survived too.

This Cache placement was one that brought me back to a place that not only learned to drive, but also to the first summer that I worked. That was an experience that I will never forget, as most of you can relate. There is a terrific feeling that comes with earning the first real dollars, not the lawn mowing money or allowance, but true "work”. I look back at that time in my life and remember how badly I wanted a job to earn that money, because earning money meant I could spend it as I wished, it was mine. This place is symbolic to me of where my drive began. I have come so far since then and I am thankful for the opportunities and patient instruction my uncle gave me. It was a pretty good start.
I ask that each of you as you write up your logs online share with us that first real world work experience or a short story of those early days of driving. I know most of us don't think about where we were, and how far we've come until you get back to that time and place where it all began. Where did you begin? How far have you driven in life?
