Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Located in the vicinity of the Wailuku Cross on Maui. This cache offers great views of Maui as well as the opportunity to "hike on the path less traveled". There are no signs along the trail, however it is well defined.
Note: Beacuse of its difficult access, this cache does not get frequent visitors. If you see any travel bug, kindly move it to another cache if you can. Mahalo!
This cache is for those who are not afraid of steep hikes. Located near the wooden cross overlooking Wailuku. The Kapilau Ridge Trail is steep with an 800 ft elevation change in about 0.5 mile. (30% slope). Near the cross the trail offers great views of Wailuku, Kahului, Haleakala and the Iao Valley. For better views and weather, it is best to visit early in the day.
From the intersection of High and Main in Wailuku, continue up the valley on Main Street. Bear left at the "Y" intersection, towards Wailuku Heights, and continue past the County Water tank. The trail head is on the right the side of the road, next to utility pole No. 5 (N 20D-52.929', W 156D-30.895'). Park your car by the side of the road uphill from trail head, or park downhill by the County water tank. Like most other places in Hawaii, it is recommended that you do not leave any valuables in your car.
Climb steep trail through ironwood forest to the Wailuku Cross. GPS signal is sporadic through the woods, but you should get a clear signal as you reach the cross.
Cache is a clear plastic container with lid. Original contents includes a sheet with geocache description, a log notebook and pen, a green light stick, a small pouch of sun block, a small first aid kit, and a Hawaii key ring. Cache is located near the cross, but not exactly at the cross.
For those who want better views, the trail continues up beyond the cross. It somewhat overgrown, but once you walk about twenty feet throught the brush, the trail opens up.
Waypoints for two overlooks are posted below.
The logbook is inside two Ziploc bags. Please make sure you put it back inside double bags and seal the container properly. Keep it as dry as possible since it does rain a lot there.
Mahalo and Have Fun!
