Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the Mill Pond Peninsula Park. The Mill Pond Peninsula is the only park in the city limits with a white sand beach, and is a little more than four acres in size. It may be a good idea to BYOP, I’m not sure how well the gel pen will hold up. FTF is an early mitten unactivated trackable MiGO Geocoin

Probably one of the most historic locations on White Lake: the site of the original Charles Mears water-powered sawmill and mill pond during the mid/late 1800’s. The peninsula is a public park now and the rest of the original property, across the road, is privately owned.

In the 1890’s, the property was sold, the old mill buildings remodeled and the millpond dam rebuilt. Once a mill boarding house for the Charles Mears lumber mill, the Albumar Hotel was opened as a resort in the 1890’s by Alfred Burland. It was the first resort in the White Lake area to be electrified, power being generated by the waterfall. Guests were also attracted to the site because they could keep their boats anchored in the well protected harbor by the point. The grounds of the property were converted into a playground, where guests could play croquette, tetherball and tennis.

The property was sold again in 1922 to Jack Lyons, and is now known as Lyon’s Den. In 2000 the City of Whitehall acquired the peninsula and has slowly been making improvements to the area. Enjoy your visit.
