Geocache Description:

I'd strongly recommend parking at S35 12.700 E149 11.407. From there it is only about 100m, mostly paved, to the cache. The cache is no longer a suitable size for swap and travel items.

Sometimes you never know if you are coming or going. This might be one of those times! If you are travelling by car, a safe way to get to this cache is to take a brief visit to NSW. This will make entering the Nation's Capital a little more cacheworthy. This traditional cache takes you to the Hughie Edwards VC Rest area - many of us have driven past it yet probably not stopped for a look around. Well, now here's your chance. There are many memorial and commemorative plaques of interest along the way. Sir Hughie Edwards was an air force hero who became Governor of Western Australia. Edwards was a highly decorated airman whose awards included the Victoria Cross for leading an attack by 12 twin-engined bombers on the port of Bremen on the 4th July 1941. The aircraft had to fly under high-tension wires, through a balloon barrage, and into intense fire. All his bombers were hit, and four were shot down. For his gallantry and determination, Edwards received the Victoria Cross. Edwards continued to lead his squadron against major targets, and was further decorated; his combination of awards marked him as one of the war’s outstanding pilots. If you'd prefer a lighter side to all of this, read down to Tangles' log report from February 11 2007! Information gathered from: http://www.awm.gov.au/fiftyaustralians/17.asp Further information about Remembrance Driveway: http://www.remembrancedriveway.org.au/dethist.htm **Please be aware of snakes despite the relatively cleared terrain - I found an ideal hide location, only to discover it already had a 1.2m occupant. We watched each other for a while and then he suggested I find an alternate hiding spot. Good advice.** FTF: Marlais
