Geocache Description:

In the Gordy's Hill/Quebradas Backcountry Byway area.

Take Exit 152 off Interstate Hwy 25 (2 miles north of Socorro, NM). On the east side of freeway, set mileage to 0 - this will be continuous mileage. Head east from freeway on paved road (old U.S. 85).
.1 mile sign to Escondida Lake RV Park - follow paved road to the left, headed north to Escondida Lake.
1.5 miles turn right, head east across RR tracks and stay on pavement past Escondida Lake County Park (on your left) and then go across Rio Grande River on the Escondida Bridge.
2.3 miles "T" intersection at little hamlet of Pueblitos. Turn right and follow sign to Quebradas Backcountry Byway, headed south - you are now on the Bosquecito Road, which is also the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail - (visit link)
2.4 pavement ends - becomes a fairly good county dirt road.
3.2 miles turn left onto the Quebradas Backcountry Byway(interpretive guide (visit link) & BLM description (visit link)
6.9 miles sign BLM Flagstone Sale Area and turn turn left to
the flagstone area. It may seem a little bumpy if you're in a car but don't worry, parking is just ahead.
7.1-7.2 if you are in a car park here, grab packs, water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes, hat, definitely your camera, and head for the cache. High clearance and trucks can go a little further and park off ATV trail.

This is part of the unofficial Gordy's Hill OHV Area (visit link) - a dedicated off-road vehicle area. So be heads-up for ATVs & dirtbikes, especially weekends during the cool season. Beyond parking spot ATV trail has some bad slopes and blind turns. When the wind is blowing you may not be able to hear approaching vehicles.

As you approach hill base, go into long switchbacks and never follow anyone else's path, ie, do not create new trails, which can happen even though it's limestone. Head up and over to northeast slope where you'll find hiking easy to the top. Keep an eye out for small fossils - ammonites, bivavles and horn coral have been found in the darker grey limestone blocks. This is the northernmost range of the ocotillo (oh-koh-tee'-oh) - literally - there are but few north of here.

Cache has a 1st aid kit (thanks to the idea in Oceanside Agates for places such as these). Unless it's needed for emergency, 1st aid kit stays in the cache.
