Geocache Description:

Jewell Falls is located on a short spur off the Jewell Pass trail approximately 1.3 kms from its’ intersection with Stoney Trail. The total round trip distance from the parking lot to Jewell Falls via Stoney and Jewell Pass trails is approximately 10 kms with an elevation gain of 137m. Park at the Barrier Dam Day Use Area located just west of Hwy 40 approximately 9.5 kms south of Hwy 1.

Although the falls are not very high they make a much appreciated and lovely spot to relax and cool down on hot summer days. In winter the area retains its’ beauty with the falls turning to ice, surrounded by quiet peaceful snow covered forest. I hiked into the falls today by crossing the dam and initially following the shore of Barrier Lake on hard wind packed snow, sometimes wandering out onto the ice. I left the shore after crossing a small bay a few kms into the hike, walking up the bank and continuing on Stoney Trail. A sign approximately 3.7 kms from the parking lot marks the start of the Jewell Pass trail. The falls are also often visited as part of a 13.2 kms loop hike (elevation gain 500m) using the Prairie View-Jewell Pass and Stoney Trails. This is a much more strenuous route but it does reward the hiker with spectacular views and the opportunity to find a few more caches. Jewell Pass Trail can also be accessed by parking at the gate into Barrier Lake Day Use area, located a few kms further south, and walking / skating across the lake (canoe in summer). The only problem with crossing on the ice is the shore to floating ice transition. Sometimes, because the lake level changes with power generation requirements this transition can become a mushy channel or a knee deep water filled valley. The floating ice appears to be thick and smooth this year but you will have to use your own judgement on this one. My family has spent many happy hours skating on this lake in years past. The cache is a small LnL in a hanger.
