Geocache Description:

Livistona australis, Cabbage Tree Palm is a slender tree with a smooth straight ringed, grey trunk, eventually reaching up to about 30m (100') tall.

Emerging from a dense canopy the shiny green palmate (fan-like) leaves are about 3 metres long, with short prickles along the stems until the crown reaches about head height when they become smooth. Conspicuous clusters of small cream flowers appear between August and October, followed by hard black fruits that feed several native bird species, particularly Topknot and White-headed Pigeons. The early settlers cooked the heart leaves as a cabbage substitute, hence its common name.

Cabbage Tree Palm is found in coastal rainforest and sheltered eucalypt forest between northern Queensland and eastern Victoria, often in large colonies at the edges of waterways and swamps. It is fire resistant, though not fire retardant.

From the Kin Kin/Gympie Rd, turn onto road sign posted Tarangau at S26 11.809 E152 55.331. Follow road and veer right at S26 11.818 E152 55.746 and then turn right onto Harry's Hut Rd at S26 11.405 E152 57.400.

Alternatively, there is a walking trail from Elanda Point (currently closed as bridge over Kin Kin Creek has been washed out and yet to be fixed). If using this option, make sure you park at the National Park car park and not the Elanda Point Camp Ground unless you are camping there.
