This EarthCache is about the characteristics/function of coastal sand dunes. You might be able to park in residential areas without paying or after hours (430pm, I think) or otherwise, you'll have to pay.
Tybee Island is a barrier island and serve a specific purpose in protecting the coast as well as providing a habitat and ecosystem in the tidal marshes for many animals and plants. The dunes on the sea side of the island also serve specific purposes. The dunes develop when winds blow in from the beach. The sand then accumulates around something that slows the wind, such as plants. Over time, a mound develops which slows the wind which helps create a larger mound. Sand continues to be added to the front (windward side) and removed from the back (leeward side). Plants growing in the dunes help stabilize the loss of sand. Dunes can develop in parallel rows perpendicular to the wind. Dunes farther from the beach are older and have a larger amount of vegetation growing on them.
