Geocache Description:

One of three caches along the Great Pond Greenbelt trail.

Great Pond is a wonderful pond right in the middle Cape Elizabeth. Much of the land around the pond is private or is conserved so views have been available only to a privileged few. A short time back, the Conservation Commission was granted two easements making public access legal for the first time. This cache is between those two access points.

THE POSTED COORDINATES ARE FAKE. This is a point in the middle of Great Pond - a nice place to paddle to but the cache won't be there.

You will find half the coordinates for this cache in Great Pond Launch; the other half in Great Pond Overlook.

I highly recommend visiting the Great Pond Launch then continuing on the trail to Great Pond Overlook. The total walk will be about 1.7 miles. You'll find this cache partway between; i.e., on the way back from the Overlook. You'll be rewarded with some great views of the pond and of the birds living here. However, there is one section that is fairly steep and which can be slippery; that section would warrant a 3.0 (and sometimes a 4.0 in the winter) terrain. You'll also find the trail between the Launch and the Overlook can be wet most any time of the year. Yes, there will be mosquitos!

If you want to avoid the wettest and steepest parts, do the Great Pond Overlook then the Great Pond Launch. The total walk will be a little longer. I'd recommend this approach if there is ice along the trail.
