Geocache Description:

Simple two-stage multicache that starts in the heart of Carrboro.

In 1882, the Durham-Greensboro Southern Railway line began offering service to a small, somewhat deserted area west of Chapel Hill, to accommodate travelers to and from UNC. In order not to disturb the scholarly folks who spent their days pondering who knows what, it was decreed that the railroad station was to be built at least a mile from the UNC campus.

Carrboro was born.

The co-ordinates listed take you to Old Carrboro Cemetery and then takes you most of the way along a bike and pedestrian path built alongside the railroad which still transports fuel right through the heart of Carrboro and onto the UNC campus. Short (b/h)ike, plenty of free parking at start.

Waypoint 1: takes you to Old Carrboro Cemetery, established around 1860. With some 200 or so graves, some of which are unidentifable it contains some interesting tales. However, you do not need to enter if you do not wish.. the keen eyed will spot the grave of Charles Linwood Brockwell. He was apparently the son (?) of one of two Brockwell brothers who were listed amongst the Confederate Army roster. Take the year....

Take the year of his death.. 1XY8 and apply the following to the listed co-ordinates.

N35deg 54.(Y+Y)8(Y-2)
W79deg 03.XY5

Waypoint 2: takes you to the cache, hidden off trail about 0.3 miles from Waypoint 1. Ahead of you whilst walking is the UNC co-generation facility, the destination of the slow trains passing through here. Also based there is the University Laundry, worth a peek at from the sidewalk if you want to extend the walk a little. The cache is a small lock n'lock container, suitable for small trades and trackables. The immediate area might be pretty overgrown in the summer. Please follow the fence to a break in the fence, then you can double back following the fenceline to the cache. No need to go more than a couple of trees-worth into the bush. It's a pretty quiet area off the paved trail, so use common sense if there are people hanging out in there before you. It's very close to the trail and in full view of the trail. There is some trash back here, consider doing some CITO! Encoded hint below is a giveaway.

Simple.

Out of interest, check the Google Map of Carrboro (click the link below) and switch to satellite view, or use Google Earth... Carrboro is pretty famous amongst the Google Earth crowd for such a small town having super hi-res imaging, as ordered up by the town council. Check out that detail! :)
