This is the story of Scotty's Grave.........
Over the past Century and a half there have been a number of mythical stories, written and told in regards to the life and death of 'Scotty'.
One story is of young 'Craig Scott', who migrated to Australia after a lost love in Scotland.
This 'Scotty' it's believed , had a fine singing voice and would often entertain patrons at the nearby Allendale Hotel.
One evening while singing, the wife of the Hotel's Proprieter walked in and at once 'Scotty' recognized her as his long lost love from Scotland.
They planned their new life ,saddled two horses behind the Hotel and rode away together into the night.
But after they left, 'Scotty' was thrown from his horse and he was killed instantly. His long lost love, it was supposed at the time, arranged for his burial and returned to her husband who was none the wiser!
Other's believe that 'Scotty' drowned at nearby Allen's Creek attempting to cross with his horse and cart!
But in actual fact,
'Scotty' was really a shepherd named James Burnett, who drowned while trying to cross the River Light at Baker's Flat, on the 2nd August 1846.
Whatever the story of 'Scotty', be it romantic ,fact or fiction he certainly must have mystified many , so much so that 'Scotty's Grave' has been a monument to his life and death ever since.
Over the years a number of subscriptions have been raised to finance repairs to the simple lonely grave erected in 1846.It is believed that another man by the name of Carroll was buried here two years earlier in 1844 although there is no headstone to mark this.
The ornate surround was cast by Mellor of Kapunda and over the years of 1885,1903,1925,1935 and 1946 subsequent repairs have been made.
In 1970 'Scotty's Grave' was renovated yet again with a small gate leading through added for visitors.
It has been written, that 'Scotty' was a remote and lonely man throughout his short life and you will see , that in death, he is monument to the same.
When you reach GZ you are looking for a regular sized square container containing log book and pen along with a theme of writing tools.PENS infact and lots of them!
So you will never be without a PEN at a cache again!
Perhaps if 'Scotty' and his long lost love had kept up communication they may have been spared the heartache!
PLEASE be sure to return cache exactly as found and use what's around you to hide it again.
Enjoy the Cache and the location ..........
