This is the fourth cache in the River North Esk Series, located a few minutes from the B966 Edzell – Fettercairn road, making it ideal for a quick cache and dash. Alternatively the caches at North Esk Series - Rocks of Solitude and North Esk Series - The Two Towers - Doulie are a mile to the north, through the Blue Door. This route also passes Angus Glens - Baby Small by Team Clova, allowing a set of four caches which can be completed in an hour or so. Parking is available at Gannochy Bridge (N56.49.690 W002.39.380). After parking cross the road and enter woodland just before the bridge.
Although there is substantial tree cover the riverside path leads past Gannochy Tower so don’t worry too much about your GPS signal. There are some steep drops to the river so proper boots should be worn and care taken with children. If you are interested there are some paths with handrails allowing access to the river.
The tower is little more than a ruin now, but it was previously a watchtower over the river maintained by the Lindsay family of nearby Edzell Castle. En route to the tower you should also see the remains of a former sawmill just after you enter the woods. In autumn there are copious amounts of blueberries for picking, followed by mushrooms. Just downstream a heron is often to be seen on the rock in the middle of the river.
Original contents – halogen bulb, leather dog collar, key chain, lanyard, key fob, TV aerial connector, kilt pin, BP Pen, Bulgarian coin (1 lev) and a luggage padlock.
Since there are limited hiding places in the tower the hint is only a hint, not a description.
