While exploring the area please notice the shallow pits and narrow trenches laced throughout the woods. These were test pits where the ancient Ojibway sought to find a solid congregation of pipestone, a soft easily carved rock from which the peace pipe was crafted. If not alot of pipestone was found they would move on to a new site until they found a suitable place to quarry, such as the one just up the trail. Most of the pits and trenches are beginning to fill in with leaves and detritus, but look closely, and you can still see Man's handiwork upon the land. This cache is placed on the edge of one of these pits.
