Geocache Description:

The Duel at Midnight - An easy cache to find but must be very stealthy when finding and rehiding, otherwise cache could be plundered by wondering eyes!Lots of muggle activity!

Amidst a cluster of trees is the famous Dueling Ground where more than fifty duels were fought during the first half of the 19th century. On what became known as The Dark and Bloody Grounds, gentlemen of Washington, D.C., settled their political and personal differences. One of the most famous disputes was between Commodores Stephen Decatur and James Barron, which was settled on March 22, 1820. Commodore Decatur, who had gained fame as the conqueror of the Barbary Pirates, was fatally wounded by Commodore Barron. Congress passed an Anti-Dueling Law in 1839, however duels continued there until just before the Civil War. That is the Historical account that happened here. Now the legend part. In 1858, It was thought that two local fellows from Bladensburg settled a quarrel by dueling at midnight with hand pistols. By the light of a full moon, both men were able to pick out there targets. But before the men actually lined up to duel, the one gentleman Francis T. Higgins, II hid a small cache of personal effects. He hid these items so if he fell from mortal wounds from the duel, then his items would not be taken by his opponent. He did tell some of his family members that he would be leaving this cache and that they could retrieve it if he fell to his death. Mr. Higgins, II died from a fatal shot to the chest. As nobody else was present at this duel, his body was left for local authorities to retrieve. Legend has it that the hidden cache was never recovered by family members. Over 135 some years have passed by. Your job is to locate this micro cache! It is a small container with just a sign in log, a travel bug tag and a pencil. This cache can accommodate only one travel bug tag at a time. Please sign the log and place it in it’s hiding place securely. This is a high muggle area, so being stealthy is required! After finding the cache, absorb the historical events that happened at this famous location! Goodluck!

(Legend portion of story is fictional)
