“'What win I if I gain the thing I seek?
A dream, a breath, a froth of fleeting joy.
Who buys a minute's mirth to wail a week?
Or sells eternity to get a toy? “
Lucrece 211-214 by William Shakespeare
Welcome to Avon, Indiana. This cache is in tribute to our namesake across the pond, Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, England and her most honored son, William Shakespeare. Avon, Indiana went through a series of previous names including Hampton, Smootsdell, White Lick and New Philadelphia, the name changing apparently at the discretion of each postmaster. Avon was finally retained permanently when an unnamed railroad worker drove a stake in the ground that posted the name Avon. There is no record of the inspiration for this choice, but, in lieu of any actual facts, and for the sake of our game, let’s just say it was Shakespeare’s Avon.
The River Avon, which runs through Stratford, the birthplace of The Bard, is believed to have derived its name from the Welsh word for river, afon. Modern day Stratford-upon-Avon is a tourist destination for theater and poetry lovers from around the world. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre, home to the Royal Shakespeare Company sits on the banks of the River Avon. The Holy Trinity Church is also picturesquely situated near the river and was the site of the baptism and burial of the great playwright. Quaint teahouses and pubs greet visitors who enjoy the little town’s preserved timber structures and thatched roofs.
This is a good rainy day cache. It is available Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., CLOSED SUNDAYS. Reception may be a problem so a generous location hint is provided. Please take your time to explore these surroundings and thumb through these, of late, underappreciated items made of tree products. Express permission has been given by the operators of this establishment for the hiding of this cache, for which we are extremely grateful.
The cache container can accommodate smaller travel bugs and trade items. Original contents include a small book of Shakespearean insults for the First to Find prize, some British coins and other anglophile trinkets. We are also launching our Wm Shakespeare Action Figure Travel Bug (The Pen is Mightier than the Sword!) who wants to visit theaters around the globe and eventually visit the real Stratford-upon-Avon.
“Go search like nobles, like noble subjects,
And in your search spend your adventurous worth;”
Pericles, Prince of Tyre II iv
