Adjacent to an old FCC monitoring site. Pathway may be muddy in spots. Cache is above ground. There is parking nearby. Brush has been recently cleared, so discretion may be neccessary.
The location of the cache is along a dirt pathway that runs along the west side of an old FCC monitoring site. This pathway is between one end of a street and a parking lot of a public school. There are houses nearby with noisy dogs so please be discreet. Stealth may be required. Be sure to bring a pen or pencil.
If you are a Ham Radio Operator like me, or a serious Short Wave Listener, you will be impressed with what you will see here. You will see three massive antenna systems. One is a huge rotatable log periodic array on a tower that looks to be at least 120 ft. tall. The array itself is massive with a boom length that looks to be almost 100 ft long. The antenna appears to be designed to cover from a low frequency of around 3 megahetrz at the longest horizontal element, to an upper frquency of around 14 megahertz indicated by the shortest horizontal element. Another appears to be a wide band monopole or vertical antenna. The bottom of the antenna is a point just above the ground with a multitude of wires reaching about 100ft where they are attached to a ring that is about 100ft in diameter. About 30 feet above the ring, the antenna again comes to a point for a total height that looks to be around 130 feet. Finally there is another array, made of vertical antennas on four towers positioned in the form of a square. This appears to be some form of direction finding array, where the phase relationship of the received signal is compared between the antennas to get a bearing to the transmitting station. This is truely an antenna farm on the grandest scale and any Ham Radio Operator would like to have a similar system.
