William the Conqueror began, about 1060, the construction of a rampart around the rocky outcrop which dominates the Flowering ash. It is the first castle of Caen which will preserve this general configuration henceforth. The room of the Chess-board, the Saint-George Church, and the keep are added by his/her son Henri 1st known as Beauclerc. Finding its warlike heart during the One hundred year old war, it failed to be shaved by the revolutionists, before accomodating, in 1815, a barracks. After the second war, it was restored and accomodates two major museums of the city, the museum of Normandy and the museum of the Art schools.
