Geocache Description:

The ghost of a traitorous monk haunts this old Abbey, which was built for the Benedictines in AD 816.

In the days immediately following the Norman Conquest, the monk betrayed his brethren to soldiers of William the Conqueror on the promise that he would be made Abbot. True to their word, the Normans appointed him Abbot. He was then nailed to the Abbey doors then skinned alive. The Normans had no love for traitors, even Saxon ones.

His hauntings are limited to one day a year - 25th May. At certain times his screams are still to be heard and he can be seen hanging from the former bell tower... but that's just a legend.

Carparking can be found at the end of the farmers lane, nr the Abbey itself. Please be careful on the lane as it can be muddy due to farm traffic and keep all accesses clear.

We think it would also be fun to do this cache by boat as it is on the Norfolk Broads.

We just love this spot, hope you enjoy it too. But please be aware that this is an ancient monument and there is no need to go pulling at stones or climbing over parts of the old abbey to find the cache. Let us know if you see any ghosts or hear any screams (other than your own) when you are there.
