Geocache Description:

Just off the haul road past the Kuparuk river bridge.

And the Alaska Darwin award goes to............. These guys..... These two hunters decided to drive in across the tundra to get Caribou they had taken outside the 5 mile haul road corridor. This was a violation of the BLM, Fish & Game and various other agencies regulations as no motor vehicles are allowed off the haul road. They were well aware of this and after hiking in and bringing down three animals, 1000 lbs of meat, they had no way to pack them out and decided to drive across the tundra in the dark of night. First was the Ford… He went out nearly 3.5 miles and became stuck frame deep in the soft tundra. He drove under the Trans Alaska pipeline, and across miles of tundra before he got stuck. That wasn't enough for our hero's though. They decided to drive in with the Dodge, their only way home now, to pull it out and you guessed it… Got it stuck too. The Dodge only made it about a 1/2 mile and is located between the haul road and the trans-Alaska pipeline. They are the talk of the town with the truckers on the CB up here. From the cache site you can't quite see the Dodge as it is sitting just over the hill between the pipeline and the haul road. It can be seen from the haul road at approximately MP 291. The Ford is way out there but might make a fun summer hike. Bring your popcorn and watch the show. Several attempts have been made to bring them out without success this winter. This cache contains photos of the trucks and the GPS coordinates to the Ford's location but you may need some help getting this cache prize home... Please respect the owners in there on going efforts to remove these rigs. I’ll up date the cache with info and new articles about this blunder… Anyone out there ever go Geocaching with a Chinook??? Update: 4/8/16 I'm no longer traveling the haul road and can't do any cache maintenance. If its ever found is poor condition if any of the usually haul road geocachers could step up and maintain it feel free to.
