Murderkill Hundred Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Rachelhead: This cache has had a good run, and it's time to say goodbye. I spoke to a neighbor there, and the new property owner plans on cutting down all the brush, paving and putting up a fence, maybe this spring. Thank you to all who came ad sought this one out.

Geocache Description:

This simple multi-cache takes you through the historic district of Felton, Delaware. Felton was one of several “whistle stops” laid out in 1856 when the Delaware Railroad line was extended to central and southern Delaware. Other “whistle stops” in Murderkill Hundred include: Wyoming (formerly known as West Camden or Camden Station), Willow Grove, Woodside, Viola (formerly known as Canterbury Station) and Plymouth.

By 1920, Felton was a booming community with a population of 771. The railroad played an integral part, providing a shipping method for lumber, baskets, canned goods and peaches.

In 1930, a fire devastated the business district causing $80,000 in damage. Within a few years, the population dropped to 463. Passenger rail service to Felton ended in the early 1950s The Felton Railroad Station still stands in the center of town. It now houses the Felton Museum, which is open the first Saturday of each month from 12 to 3 pm. To find this cache, go to the listed coordinates and find the plaque dedicated to “Felton’s Best Friend”. Subtract 1492 from the year the society was formed. Result equals ABC. Subtract 1287 from the year the plaque was dedicated. Result equals XYZ. N 39? 00.ABC’ W075? 34.XYZ’ Look for the 2 benchmarks at this site before heading on to the final stage.
