Geocache Description:

A challenging hike up Owl's Head Mt. in the town of Long Lake. Approximately 2.7 miles one-way, and 700 feet of elevation on some rough trail. A short bushwack is required to reach the cache. Plan on 3 1/4 hours total. Tree canopy may increase the difficulty in the summer.

Caution! Summer 2009: Reports of wasp or bee nest between the trail and the cache! Please keep your eyes and ears open.
Cache is an clear plastic container hidden off the trail near the remains of the observer's cabin, .5 miles from the fire tower at the summit of Owl's Head Mountain in the Sargent Ponds Wild Forest. After finding this cache, continue on to the summit to climb the fire tower and to look for my cache "Owl's Head Mt. #3: Summit Cache" (coming SOON). The final portion of the trail is more challenging.

STARTING OUT: The trail head is on a sharp curve on the right side of the Endion Road 1.6 miles from Rte. 30.

HISTORY: The cabin was temporary home for the person whose job was to look for forest fires from the fire tower on the summit. The first Owls Head Fire Tower was a wooden structure with open platform erected and staffed in 1911 in response to a disastrous series of forest fires. The current 35 foot tall tower with enclosed cab was constructed by the NYS-DEC in 1919 and staffed until 1970. In 2003 the DEC and Friends of Owl Head Fire Tower restored the lookout and it is again open for hikers. The observers cabin, located below the summit in a "saddle", was burned in 1979.
