Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden along part of the Great Eastern Pingo Trail, near Stow Bedon. You will need to park at the car park at N52 31.958 E000 51.579 which is the site of the former Stow Bedon railway station which once served the Crab and Winkle line from Thetford to Swaffham.

Take time to look at the information boards in the car park which give a fascinating insight into the unique history of the Breckland area.

The word 'pingo' comes from an Eskimo word meaning 'hill'. Pingos are found today in the arctic tundra. They are ice mounds fed from below by groundwater, which grow every winter and then melt in summer, forming a crater-like pond. As the mounds grow the overlying soil is shifted off them to form a surrounding rim or rampart.

The Pingo ponds which you will walk past on the trail formed when ice mounds in the topsoil finally melted and collapsed to form irregular pools at the end of the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. They are home to a unique range of wildlife.

The cache is situated about a mile from the car park and you will see many pingos along the way as you walk along the former railway track. You can then either return to the car park or continue around the trail, which is 8 miles long. You can get refreshments from the pubs in Stonebridge or Thompson, both of which are off the route but within walking distance.

Don't worry if you hear any bangs; the Stanford Battle Area is but a stone's throw away!
