A traditional cache in a wooded nature reserve.
Danby Wood is one of eight local nature reserves in Norwich. Until the early 1900s it was a quarry where chalk was extracted and converted to lime. Norwich Corporation bought the site in 1919. There is an underground network of tunnels, now sealed, some running under nearby Eaton golf course. The steep sides of the quarry are still visible, and you will see plenty of chalk - the compacted remains of shells of sea creatures living millions of years ago when the sea covered this area! Sycamore, ash, lime, beech and oak trees have colonised the quarry, and one of these trees, just off a path, is the location for "Annabel's Treasure Trove". A board at the car park (Marston Lane, opposite the Holiday Inn, off the A140 Ipswich Road) gives more information about the animals, plants and fungi to be found through the seasons. Danby Wood can also be reached by foot/bike from Eaton Village along Church Lane/Marston Lane. My GPS was okay in the wood, but "lock on" before entering. The cache is in a plastic clip-lid box, at ground level, within a black bag. A length of cord dangles from a nearby tree...
