Tammisalon kanava avattiin uudelleen vuonna 2001
The canal of Tammisalo was re-opened year 2001

[FIN]: Tammisalon kanava on siitä erikoinen, että ilman sitä Tammisalo olisi niemi, nyt se on teknisesti ottaen saari. Olen ollut itse mukana Tammisalon kanavan avajaisissa.

Tammisalon kanava sijaitsee Helsingissä Strömsinlahden ja Porolahden välillä. Herttoniemen kartanonherra Bengt von Spången rakennutti Tammisalon ja mantereen välissä olleen salmen kanavaksi vuonna 1762. Hän ajatteli, että kanava olisi porvoolaisille kalastajille oikotie Helsingin kauppatorille ja että hän voisi ottaa maksun kanavan käytöstä.
Virtaukset mataloittivat vähitellen kanavaa ja siitä tuli purjehduskelvoton. Herttoniemen kartanon uusi omistaja Carl Olof Cronstedt täytätti kanavan vuonna 1794. Tammisalon asukkaat alkoivat haluta jo 1950-luvulla kanavaa aukaistavaksi, mutta vasta vuonna 2001 kanava rakennettiin uudelleen. Uusi kanava on tarkoitettu ainoastaan soutuveneille ja kanooteille. Kanava on noin 170 m pitkä noin neljä metriä leveä.

[ENG]: The Tammisalo canal is special in the sense that without it Tammisalo would be a peninsula, now it technically is an island. I took part in the reopening of the Tammisalo canal.

The Tammisalo canal is located in Helsinki between the Strömsinlahti and Porolahti bays. The lord of the Herttoniemi manor Bengt von Spången opened the narrows between Tammisalo and the mainland into a channel in 1762. His plan was to offer a tolled shortcut for fishermen from Porvoo to the Helsinki market.

The canal eventually silted up and became unsailable. The new owner of the Herttoniemi manor
Carl-Olof Cronstedt refilled it in 1794. The residents of Tammisalo showed interest in reopening the channel already back in the 1950's, but it took until 2001 before the channel was rebuilt. The renewed canal is intended only for rowboats and canoes. The channel is about 170 meters long and four meters wide.
