This cache is located in the Dayett
Mills Historic Area. The entrance is on Dayett Mill Road
right off of Old Baltimore Pike and just to the East of
Cooch’s Bridge. The State of Delaware purchased 27 acres here
along the Upper Christiana River in order to preserve one of
the oldest mills in Delaware and for watershed restoration
purposes.
Parking is at the information kiosk. The
kiosk was set up by the Pencader Heritage Area Association and
contains much information about this historic Hundred so I won’t
include it here.
After finding the cache be sure to check out Dayett Mill at the
end of the road and Cooch’s Bridge just to the West on Old
Baltimore Pike. Cooch’s Bridge is probably the most well-known
asset of Pencader Hundred, but I couldn’t place this cache any
closer to it because there is no safe place to park. The only
fighting of the Revolutionary War in Delaware took place at this
location on September 3, 1777. American light infantry and cavalry
led by General William Maxwell were unable to halt the British
advance commanded by Lord Cornwallis. Supposedly the thirteen-star
American flag was first carried in battle during this engagement.
However, this is disputed.
