Geocache Description:

Colfax fire tower is an 80 foot Aermotor LS-40 built in 1950 and operated until August of 1972 when it was closed giving way to aerialdetection.   The tower still remains today and supports a DEC repeater antenna which is still in use.  The tower is owned by NYSDEC but the watchmans cabin is privately owned so please walk on past the cabin and respect the owners privacy.    The public is welcome to visit and view the tower but it is fenced off and closed to climbing.  The view from the surface is limited during the summer months due to leaves and brush.  The area past the fire tower is owned by the county and hosts a communications tower.    The communications tower and its guys are fenced off so please stay clear of them.

The cache is a matchstick container hanging in an evergreen tree but shouldn't be any problem for a geocacher to find.

Driving directions:
From route 22 in Lake Lauderdale take Kenyon Hill Road west about half a mile then turn left onto Hedges Road.  Take Hedges road about half a mile and turn left on Fire Tower Road. From this point depending on the leaves you should see the tower.  Go about a quarter mile and you'll see a dirt pull off on your right just before a small grade.  Park here being sure to not block the road and walk the 500 feet to the tower.  Stay clear of the cabin on your left as that's private property.
