Geocache Description:

MMmmmm boy! Gwawver Jelly!

At one time, Taylor's Creek, the Kissimmee River, and the shoreline of Lake Okeecbee were all lined with wild Guava plants. There are still some here, as a matter of fact there is one right here at this cache site. The Guava, (Genus Psidium), is a tropical and sub-tropical fruit with a thin rind, usually yellow in color, firm flesh and a million hard seeds surrounded by pulp. People around these parts (including yours truly) use these "Gwawvers" to make some of the best tasting jelly to be found in the entire world. Guavas can be eaten fresh or made into pies, cobblers or candy.. but Guava Jelly is surely a dish fit for a king, and the most common use for these pungent fruits.

When I was young there was a company that produced Guava Jelly commercially just about 200' away from the cache site, (you can see it from here) and they would hire us boys to pick guavas in the summer. I think we got 50¢ or 75¢.. maybe a dollar, per box, but even though there were plenty of trees around, summer is not the ideal bearing time for the trees and we never made much money. Look at the tree at the cache site and have pity on a poor feller picking these things in the middle of the hot summer, getting stung by Guava Worms, and Trailer Ants, for $2 or $3 a day!

I keep a few guava trees around my house and still make me a batch of jelly every now and then.

The cache is a magnetic key holder and is just a few inches above ground level. Parking at the site.
